Planning. You can try to foresee things and do your best, but the unknown kicks your butt. The day was the hardest so far, and it's not over yet. The climb was almost all uphill; 3000 ft elevation gain in the 15 miles up to here. I was SO ready for a shower and a burger. However, … Continue reading Mount Laguna, day 3

PCT day 2…
I've been consistently surprised by the cell service so far: it has been excellent. I had resigned myself to being out of pocket for days at a time, and I'm sure most of the trail is that way. But so far, awesome. Go AT&T. I'm resting under the bridge under hwy S1 at mile 24. So … Continue reading PCT day 2…
PCT Day 2
after a wonderfully quiet night, I resumed hiking toward Lake Morena. I should mention that there is no water from the border to the lake, a distance of 20 miles. At mile 15, Hauser Canyon is a seasonal stream, (dry now) someone had left three Gallon water jugs. I had three ltr left, but it was … Continue reading PCT Day 2
This is it! Campo.
I'm here at the start of the PCT. it is a little hard to believe. All the planning and waiting has come down to this point. I'm writing this while camping on a flat spot at the 13-mile point. It is finally hitting home. Canada, here I come.
Food for re-supply
No one can carry food for 150 days. My journey is actually split up into 33 small 2-8 day segments. Most of them end near civilization where I can purchase food for the next leg. Some, however end near a small town with a gas station and combination restaurant/post office. For these I can mail myself … Continue reading Food for re-supply

Homeless!
Friday the 20th was my last day at work. Today I packed the truck and left the house I was leasing for the last time. Jobless and Homeless. It hasn't sunk in yet. I was expecting more of...something. Excitement? Fear? Instead I'm irritated.I'm driving to woodland hills in Los Angeles from the Central Valley, a … Continue reading Homeless!
Water worries
Water may be a real issue on the PCT this year. Springs and streams that are normally reliable may dry up. It will mean constantly checking the Water Report web site at every opportunity to plan ahead. That only covers the first 750 miles, however and may not be enough. Oregon and Washington ALSO have … Continue reading Water worries
Bittersweet day, today
This was an emotional day. It started poorly: I overslept and missed a conference call at 6:30am. This really bummed me out since it was mostly co-workers wanting to say goodby. You see, this was my last day at work and I wanted to at least savor it. To go out as a class act, not … Continue reading Bittersweet day, today
2014 PCT Survey
There is another Blog where the writer hiked the PCT in 2014. As part of that, he also surveyed everyone he could find and compiled the results. His 2014 PCT Survey has some interesting factoids but what I find most telling are the questions like "What was your least favorite ..?" Great stuff for me … Continue reading 2014 PCT Survey
