I passed on the campsite at mile 62; it was exposed and the wind was fierce. Another mile I found a bare spot on a hillside where the wind was lighter and I made my camp. In hindsight, it didn't help much. It was dark and stormy night... Well a chilly, windy night anyway. Between the … Continue reading HalfFast

Windy and 60
I'm sitting in the shade in front of the restrooms at Sunrise Trailhead with four other hikers. It is the 60 mile point from the border. As the PCT is 2,660 miles long, I have 2,600 to go. Progress! It has been windy all day with some pretty strong gusts. I aim to hike another 2 miles … Continue reading Windy and 60
Mount Laguna, day 3
Planning. You can try to foresee things and do your best, but the unknown kicks your butt. The day was the hardest so far, and it's not over yet. The climb was almost all uphill; 3000 ft elevation gain in the 15 miles up to here. I was SO ready for a shower and a burger. However, … Continue reading Mount Laguna, day 3
PCT day 2…
I've been consistently surprised by the cell service so far: it has been excellent. I had resigned myself to being out of pocket for days at a time, and I'm sure most of the trail is that way. But so far, awesome. Go AT&T. I'm resting under the bridge under hwy S1 at mile 24. So … Continue reading PCT day 2…
PCT Day 2
after a wonderfully quiet night, I resumed hiking toward Lake Morena. I should mention that there is no water from the border to the lake, a distance of 20 miles. At mile 15, Hauser Canyon is a seasonal stream, (dry now) someone had left three Gallon water jugs. I had three ltr left, but it was … Continue reading PCT Day 2
This is it! Campo.
I'm here at the start of the PCT. it is a little hard to believe. All the planning and waiting has come down to this point. I'm writing this while camping on a flat spot at the 13-mile point. It is finally hitting home. Canada, here I come.
San Diego here I come…
Printed my e-Ticket for Amtrak! I'm taking the 774 from Chatsworth tomorrow, Friday. It's happening! Mark will pick me up in downtown and put me up for the night, then drive me out to the middle of the desert and leave me. 😀 Well...not quite the middle. The official trail-head/start of the Pacific Crest Trail … Continue reading San Diego here I come…
Practice Hike to Castle Peak, Feb 21
Some friends and I rented a cabin in Soda Springs near Donner Pass this weekend and hiked to the top of Castle Peak. Castle Peak is just east of PCT Mile 1162 and the P. Grubb Hut. The snow was low on the North slopes and nonexistent on the West and South facing ones. What … Continue reading Practice Hike to Castle Peak, Feb 21
