Back home

It’s Thursday and I took Wednesday off as a me-collapsed/rest day. It was a very active vacation coupled with the Travel-Day-From-Hell and I was exhausted. Overall, the trip lived up to the hype. There were moments when there were way too many people, (more then a few of those moments) but overall I really enjoyed myself.

Sadly, much of the really neat stuff requires backpacking 2-5 nights, and I can’t do that anymore. Still, I did as much as I could day-hiking from Trail Heads. And truth to tell, it was still very, very good.

Some numbers from the trip:

  • Total days: 14
  • Miles hiked: 58 (roughly)
  • Miles driven: 2,878
  • Total charges to credit card: $2,013
  • New tires: $256 (evil eye)
  • Blisters on feet: several

The charges include Gas, meals, swag, etc. I have NO idea what repairing the fender on the trailer will cost. The fender is 1/8″ soft steel and was welded on. The violence of the right tire shredding actually ripped the rear of the fender from the trailer frame. So I need someone who can weld. (Luckily I didn’t lose the fender itself)

This will be my last big trip. The long miles driving wore on me much worse than expected. I think, sadly, it’s the age. There’s enough to see and experience in California to keep me busy for the next 50 years, at least. I’ll be 123 years old then and still plan to keep hiking.

Thanks to everyone who followed this journey.

Be well

  1. Michael, Thoroughly enjoyed reading about your daily adventures ! One day soon I will take this same route and spend more time hiking. I have done JH and Tetons and to the north Island Park (where I saw my first moose). However, I do have a dog that travels with me now that I have to take into consideration. I travel frequently up to Idaho Falls (what I call the gateway to all things wonderful) My average travel time between Modesto and IF is 14 hours (with the dog) – It takes me a day to recover from the drive as well as getting acclimated to the altitude in IF (thankfully I have not had any issues with China bombs : ). Honestly, for me the worst part of the drive is Sac – Mo ugh 😦

So glad you made it home safe and look forward to more commentary. You inspire me to up my camping game!

    Christine
