Nightmare Travel Day

1st day on the road leaving Yellowstone was blissfully uneventful. I arrived at Angel Creek CG and other than a brief windstorm last night it was great.

I got an early start on the day trying to get home at a decent hour. Its a 10+ hour drive.

I wasn’t on the road more than an hour when my trailer suddenly bucked and started shaking. I was only a few miles to an off-ramp and pulled into a gas station.

Blowout!

Yeah, drama. A blowout. Well, I packed a sizzer jack, tire tools, and a spare tire. Shouldn’t be that hard. Then, I found the cheap tire/rim I purchased don’t fit!

Doesn’t Fit

I never actually tried to fit the spare tire onto the wheel. Sigh…

Fortunately I had some good luck! There was a tire store nearby, AND they had a tire that fit!

Cost? $103.00 and two hours I won’t get back.

Back on the road and 200 miles later the other tire went boom. Luckily I was 7 miles from a rest stop, and was able to limp in. This time just tread separated. It also destroyed the fender!!!

Damaged Trailer

Here is the tire. It still has air, the tire just failed. The RV forums call these ‘China Bombs’.

China Bombs

I called seven tire shops within 50 miles and none had my size in stock. (They Pinky-Promise to have it tomorrow…)

Finally got Les Swab back in Winnemucca, 98 miles back. Still better than 200 miles back. Ugh. I know I ‘Shoulda’ replaced both when I had the chance. Les Swab was $154 for the same size tire. And they’re both off-brand tires. Still, it was another 100 miles (200 RT) to the other tire place.

The new tire is on and it’s 5:30pm. I left my campsite at 6:30am, so 11 hours with all the drama and still 5 hours (maybe!) until I’m home.

I’m tired, filthy from changing two tires, my right leg wants to murder me, and I’m very, very grumpy.
